Professor Malabika Sarkar has been appointed as the vice-chancellor of Presidency University for one-year term by state government. Sarkar a Jadavpur University professor will assume the charge on October 19, 2011.Sarkar served as the Head of the Department of English at Jadavpur University from 1999 to 2001 and was a member of the faculty until 2009. She is also the founder president of Centre for Studies of Romantic Literature, an autonomous resource centre set up in 1994 in Kolkata. She was the editor as well as a contributor to the book, Moneta’s Veil: Essays on Nineteenth Century Literature that was published in 2010.
The appointment of the University’s vice chancellor had hit a roadblock when the outgoing VC Amita Chatterjee refused the extension for two months. Her term expired on October 5. With the state government having no option left it has nominated Sarkar as the second Vice Chancellor of the university.
Minister for Higher Education Bratya Basu said the interim arrangement was made till a search committee decides on a permanent appointment.
